Libyan anti-corruption activist among victims killed in Benghazi explosion

Two people, including a famous anti-corruption activist, were killed on Saturday in an explosion in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city.

Military and medical officials confirmed the deaths which occured in al-Kich, AFP reports.

Mohamad al-Azoumi, a spokesman for the Allied forces brigades of the parallel authorities confirmed there was a mortar shell explosion in the al-Kich neighborhood in Benghazi.

According to the medical source who confirmed the deaths, “two people were killed and five others injured following the explosion in al-Kich,” and all of the victims were civilians.

According to the same source, one of the two victims is “the famous anti-corruption activist Mohamad Bouguiguis, who chairs the Libyan organization fighting against corruption.”

Bouguiguis was known for his support of the Libyan national army under the command of Marshal Haftar, and his opposition to political and armed Islamists.

The source of the mortar is not yet unknown.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, condemned the attack on Sunday.

“Culprits must be brought to justice,” he tweeted.
